992 GT3 RS PROJECT - INSTALMENT 03 (AERODYNAMICS)
How has it been three weeks already? With last week’s instalment of project 992 GT3 RS focusing on wheels, tyres and brakes, this week’s instalment is focusing on what’s keeping those tyres on the ground. Aero.
With a number of JCR aero parts currently in development for the 992 GT3 RS platform, we can’t wait to talk you through the products that we’re looking forward to testing in the wild soon!
Front Splitter Extensions & Dual Dive Planes
One of the talking points amongst 992 GT3 RS owners is the desire to have a little more front end grip in the mid to high speed corners. Aero balance is certainly biased towards the rear of the car, which certainly creates a very safe platform with understeer being the limiting factor however there’s certainly a little room to move the centre of pressure forwards a little.
The combination of our Front Splitter Extensions & Dual Dive Planes will certainly assist in moving the aero balance a little more forward and in combination with some other planned aero parts for the rear of the vehicle, should help push the platform that little bit further in terms of outright pace.
Roof Strakes
A new addition to the 992 GT3 RS over RS variants of the past is the addition of Roof Strakes which help to guide the hot air exiting the radiator exhaust up and away from the rear engine air intake. The factory strakes are manufactured in a heavy plastic whereas the JCR parts are produced in light weight carbon fibre. Not only do they look fantastic, blending in perfectly with the factory carbon fibre found on the roof of the Weissach Pack cars but we have also taken the opportunity to further optimise the design.
A quick and easy direct replacement for the OEM component, whilst providing aerodynamic benefits and a significant aesthetic change when compared to the factory plastic parts.
Wing End Plates
The 992 GT3 RS is famous for its HUGE rear wing and you wouldn’t think that there’s much to be improved in this area. The OEM rear does a fantastic job and combined with the DRS function is extremely efficient too. When loading up the car on track, we noticed a certain amount of flex in the factory rear wing end plates, at higher speeds this will certainly attribute to an amount of inefficiency with energised air being bled off the side of the main plane. Carbon Fibre End plates are a product that we have created for other models previously, only this time, with the added complication of a DRS mechanism plus another factor at play.
Accounting for the DRS was the first focus of developing our new end plates. We’ve done this by designing a three-piece part. The main structure of the end plate is manufactured from Billet Aluminium and makes up the main core. This will allow for the DRS to function properly as it would from factory whilst also having a huge increase in stiffness over the factory, plastic assembly. This increase in stiffness will ensure that the deflection found in the factory components is no longer an issue, thus improving the factory rear wings efficiency.
The other two components of the JCR end plates are made up of carbon fibre trims which enclose the end plates and also add a great aesthetic benefit over that of the factory end plates.
Rear Wheel Aero Discs
The final aero component in this first phase of development are the Carbon Fibre Rear Wheel Aero Discs. We know that aesthetically, these aero discs certainly split opinion and we were on the fence when it came to their effectiveness until we tested them for ourselves on our very own 991 GT2 RS MR.
Being installed onto the outer face of the rear wheel, the Aero Discs purpose is to reduce drag and lift which in turn allows for a less aggressive rear wing angle to achieve the same amount of positive downforce at the rear, without compromising straight line performance. As mentioned, this is something that we tested for ourselves on our own GT2 RS MR and whilst the benefit is small, it’s certainly measurable and along with the other components, the difference certainly adds up.
Like a lot of the new JCR Aero components, these too will be manufactured entirely from the highest quality Prepreg Carbon Fibre and Billet Aluminium moulds. Another product that not only improves the aerodynamic efficiency of the car but also adds some visual impact too.
Further Developments
On top of the current projects mentioned above, we’re also currently in the early stages of development of our 3D Printed Titanium Rear Wing Uprights, Carbon Fibre Rear DRS Flap and a full replacement Carbon Fibre Rear Diffuser. Plenty more to come from JCR on this platform and we can’t wait to demonstrate all of these parts working in harmony on track!
Join us here again on Sunday for the next instalment of our extensive 992 GT3 RS build and let us know below, what modifications you guys would like to see from us for this fantastic platform.
